Lost the Yarn Label? Discover the Easiest Way to Identify any yarn weight!

Want to find the perfect yarn for your project? Learn how to measure yarn thickness with WPI (Wraps Per Inch)! This simple method helps you determine yarn weight and choose the right yarn for crochet and knitting.

How to Measure WPI?

Follow these steps to check your yarn thickness:

  1. Choose a Tool: Use a ruler, pencil, or a round stick.
  2. Wrap the Yarn: Wrap the yarn around the tool without pulling too tight or leaving spaces.
  3. Count the Wraps: Count how many times the yarn fits in one inch. If you wrap over 2 inches, divide the total wraps by 2 to get the WPI (you can also wrap over 1 inch or 4 inches and adjust the calculation accordingly).
  4. Compare with the Table: Use the table below to find the yarn weight.

Using Nancy’s Knit Knacks WPI Tool Kit

If you have a Nancy’s Knit Knacks WPI Tool Kit, measuring yarn thickness is even easier. This tool is specially designed to help you determine the WPI accurately. (or a ruler for the same method!)

How to Use It?

  1. Place the yarn in the groove of the WPI tool.
  2. Wrap the yarn around the tool following the markings.
  3. If you wrap over a 2-inch section, divide the total wraps by 2 to get the WPI (you can also wrap over 1 inch or 4 inches and adjust the calculation accordingly).
  4. Compare your result with the WPI chart.

I made a video tutorial showing how to use this tool! Watch it here🎥

Is WPI Important?

Here are some reasons why WPI is useful:

  1. Different Brands Have Different Thickness: Two worsted yarns from different brands may not be the same. WPI helps you compare.
  2. No Label? No Problem!: If your yarn has no label or is handspun, WPI can tell you the weight.
  3. Find Yarn Alternatives: If you can't find the suggested yarn for a pattern, use WPI to find a similar one.

Conclusion

Measuring WPI is not a must, but it helps you pick the right yarn. It is a great way to compare different brands, reuse old yarn, or choose the best yarn for your crochet or knitting projects. Try it next time and see how it helps! 😊
